Self Storage Guides

The How
The What
The Why

Self storage in the UK is a £1.3 billion industry spread across more than 3,000 stores, yet most of what's written about it online is thin, out of date, or quietly designed to sell you something. These guides are different. Each one is a plain-English, research-led answer to a real question people ask before they rent a unit — what it costs, whether you need insurance, what happens to goods that get left behind, and how to tell a well-run facility from a badly-run one. No jargon, no upselling, and every figure sourced and dated.

We built this library because a few gaps come up again and again. Pricing pages that quote an industry revenue figure as though it's the price you'd pay. Insurance advice written by the people selling the insurance. Guides to "buying abandoned units" that describe American auction law to a British audience it doesn't apply to. Smartbox is a family-run operator, and our aim with these guides is to give you a straight, useful answer rather than the most.

Every guide here is kept current, cites its sources, and is written to help you make a decision — even where the honest answer isn't the one that sends business our way.

How these guides are organised

The library is grouped into three clusters, so you can go straight to what you need. If you're just browsing, the Money & contracts guides are the best place to start — they cover the questions that cost people the most when they get them wrong.

How we research and write these guides

Every guide in this library follows the same standards. We lead with the most authoritative source we can find — the Self Storage Association UK annual industry report for market data, legislation.gov.uk for the law, the FCA and the Association of British Insurers for anything on insurance — and we name that source and its date in the text so you can check it yourself. Where a figure is an industry average rather than a price you'd pay, we say so. Where the law in Scotland or Northern Ireland differs from England and Wales, we say that too.

We update guides when the underlying facts change: a new annual report, a regulatory change, a shift in how the industry operates. Publication and last-updated dates are shown on each guide. The library is maintained by the Smartbox editorial team, and our aim is simple — to be the guide we'd want to read before renting a unit ourselves.
